(a) Bentuk sedang sekarang

What does Barbara look like now ont top of the hill? How does she appear? Her hair is hanging down over her forehead. She is wearing a coloured scarf which belongs to Pamela. She is breathing fast after the long climb. She is feeling tired and notices that Harry seems tired too. She feels glad, however, that they are standing at the top of the hill and not at the bottom.

(b) Bentuk sedang lampau

What was Harry thinking about at the top of the hill? He was thinking about his unfitness. He wished he were sitting at home with a cool drink in his hand. He really was growing old. He understood that only too well. Perhaps, though, he was trying too hard. He didn’t like this long walk very much. In fact he hated it. He supposed though that it would be better not to say anything about it. What did Pamela think of long walks that afternoon? She thought they were healty and pleasant. She was young.

(c) Bentuk sedang akan datang

Peter is thinking about what he will be doing the following evening. What will he be doing? Peter will be dancing with Pamela in the village hall. He will recognize old faces and will be seeing old frinds. The village band will be playing and the wooden floor will be shaking under their feet. He will refuse to dance a waltz as he doesn’t remember the steps but will certainly be dancing the cha cha cha, a dance he will never forget.

CATATAN

1. Kata kerja yang menyatakan sesuatu yang bersifat seketika:

(a) Kata kerja yang menyatakan persepsi langsung: see; hear; smell; recognize; notice; understand; remember; forget.

  • I see him now.
  • The dog smells a rat.
  • I hear him calling.
  • He will recognize old faces.
  • He doesn’t he will never forget.
  • She notices that Harry is tired.
  • I understand what you say.

(b) Beberapa kata kerja yang menyatakan rupa: appear, look like, seem:

  • What does  Barbara look like now?
  • How does she appear?
  • Harry seems tired.

(a) Emosi: love, hate, care, adore, like, dislike, to be angry, annoyed, pleased, forgive, dan sebagainya.

  • He didn’t like this long walk.
  • In fact he hated it.
  • She doesn’t care what you do.
  • I dislike waltzes.
  • We’re very angry with you.
  • Now, she adores her husband.
  • We forgive you everything.

(b) Keinginan atau penolakan: want, wish, refuse, feel like.

  • They want to belong to your company.
  • He will refuse to dance a waltz.
  • I wish you would sit still.
  • He fells like a drink.

know, suppose, mean, think, feel (that):

  • He supposed it would be better not to say anything.
  • She feels glad that they have come.
  • He knows you will succeed.
  • I don’t think he is five years old yet.
  • He doesn’t mean that at all.

Ada perbedaan antara to feel (that) dan to feel. To feel (that) menyatakan pendapat tertentu; to feel tidak menyatakan pendapat tertentu dan dapat dipakai dengan bentuk sedang: She is feeling tired.

  • He is thinking about his country.
  • I was thinking about you yesterday.

(a) Melukiskan pemilikan: belong to, possess, own, have (possess), have got:

  • The millionaire now owns four cars.
  • They possess four houses.
  • This umbrella belongs to Mr. Hardcastle.
  • He was a cold today.
  • I’ve got a bicycle at home.

(b) Melukiskan fakta-fakta yang pasti: contain, consist of.

  • This box contains books.
  • This soup consist of peas and water.

5. To be kecuali bila dipakai dalam bentuk pasif:

Aktif:

  • He was ill when I saw him.
  • Tomorrow we shall be in London.

Pasif:

  • She is being told all about it.
  • We are being driven there by car.

  • He is being helpful.
  • He is being unpleasant.

Perkecualian

  • He is always forgetting things.
  • He is always hearing strange noises.

  • I am forgetting my French.
  • They were wanting to speak to you.
  • We are refusing to help. (Gagasan yang akan datang.)

ON TOP OF THE HILL

Perhatikan phrasa on top of. Kita bisa juga menyatakan on the top of. Sebaliknya kalau digunakan at, kata sandang the harus dipakai: at the top of the hill.

ONLY TOO WELL

  • He understood the difficulty only to well.
  • He knows only too well that evening is lot.

HE WISHED HE WERE

  • He wished he were sitting at home.
  • He wished he were clever.

KATA DEPAN
