  • What did they look like? (Seperti apa karang-karang itu?) I feel like. (Saya ingin). Contoh: It’s so hot, I feel like a drink. Do you feel like going to school?
  • Why on earth? (Mengapa gerangan?) On earth (gerangan) bila dipakai sesudah kata-kata tanya seperti who, what, why dan how bisa membentuk pertanyaan yang sangat tegas. (Kadang-kadang on earth tidak perlu diterjemahkan). Contoh: Where on earth did you buy that extraordinary hat? To get off (a ship, train, etc.) Turun dari (kapal, kereta api, dsb.).
  • To get through (a crowd, wood, etc.) Menerobos (orang banyak, hutam, dsb.)

PERCAKAPAN

Barbara : I saw the white cliffs of Dover from the boatdeck.

Harry : What did they look like?

Barbara : Wonderfull! You can see them clearly. You should go and see them yourself!

Harry : Oh, cliffs are the same everywhere! I think I’ll go down and fetch the suitcase from the cabin before the ship arrives.

Barbara : Oh, darling. Life isn’t just business and organising things. This is our first visit to England! We must see everything we can!

Harry : I expect the fog will prevent us from seeing anything.

Barbara : Oh, don’t be silly! Fog doesn’t cover England the whole time as some people think.

Harry : Anyway, I feel like a drink. I’am going to the bar.

Barbara : But you can have a drink at any time. Have one before dinner when we get to London.

Harry : But I feel like one now. When do we arrive?

Barbara : In about half an hour.

Harry : Oh, all right. I’ll go and see the cliffs. But look at crowd on the boatdeck! Why on earth are they standing there?

Barbara : They’re queueing.

Harry : Queueing? What for?

Barbara : To get off the ship.

Harry : But you said there was still half an hour –

Barbara : Yes, but the English love forming queues. Apparently it’s one of their national characteristics.

Harry : Extraordinary! Well. I can’t get through all those people. So I shan’t be abble to see the white cliffs. We’ll have a drink in the bar and then I’ll go down and fetch the suitcase.

CATATAN
PEMAKAIAN THE (1)

The man who came here yesterday.
The house that I have in.
The earth goes round the sun.

MENGHILANGKAN THE

1. Bentuk Jamak
Tertentu : I love the flowers in your garden.
Umum : I love flowers.

Tertentu : The milk in this cup is warm.
Umum : Milk is white
Tertentu : The fog in England will prevent us from seeing anything.
Umum :Fog doesn’t cover England the whole time.

Contoh: lights; glass; drink; earth.
Tak dapat dihitung : Windows are made of glass
Dapat dihitung : would you like a glass of whiskey?
Tak dapat dihitung : The sun gives light
Dapat dihitung : There were many lights in the street

3. Kata benda abstrak
Tertentu : The life of Mr. Smith is difficult.
Umum : Life isn’t all business.
Tertentu : The lover of Mr. Smith is blind.
Umum : Love is blind.

4. Nama waktu makan.
Tertentu : I enjoyed the dinner he gave us.
Umum : We had a drink before dinner.

5. Nama bangsa. Perhatikan juga bahwa jika kita membicarakan nama sesuatu bangsa tanpa mengikuti kata people, artikel the boleh kita pakai: The English love forming queues. Namun bila kita membicarakan bahasanya, artikel the tidak perlu dipakai: He speak Spanish. She only knows Italian.

KATA DEPAN

Perhatikanlah kata-kata depan dalam kalimat berikut ini:
The fog will prevent us from seeing anything.
You can have a drink
at any time.
We shall arrive in about half an hour.

KATA KERJA TIDAK BERATURAN
