PERCAPAKAN

Barbara : Oh! Take your elbow off my shoulder, Harry! I’m not an instrument for supporting your camera.

Harry : I’m sorry. It steadies me while I’m taking the picture.

Barbara : I can’t even look at Westminster Abbey in peace!

Harry : You talks as if you wanted me to go away from here altogether.

Barbara : No. I shouldn’t like you to miss Westminster Abbey! What a pity we can’t get onto the roof. The view would be wonderful.

Pamela : Let’s go into the Abbey.

Barbara : And look at the inside. (Kepada Harry). Did you know that the most of the Kings and Queens of England have been crowned inside this building?

Peter : Many of them have also been buried here. (Pintu berdecit). Come on, let’s go in.

Barbara : Oh!

Harry : It seems so dark after the sunlight outside the Abbey.

Barbara : So it should be! I can just imagine the dead kings and queens being carried out of the sunlight into the darkness of their final resting-place!

Harry : Very poetic! Barbara has poetry in her soul.

Barbara : Oh, of course! (Kepada Harry). This is where many of England’s greatest poets are also buried.

Pamela : That’s right. In Poets’s Corner.

Barbara : Can we see Byron’s tomb?

Peter : No, I don’t think Byron is buried here. Queen Victoria thought he was too immoral to be burried in the Abbey.

Barbara : Surely many kings were more immoral than Byron.

Peter : Ah, but they were royal!

Harry : I think the British make too much fuss about royalty. I’m confirmed republican.

Barbara : I’m not. I like colour and tradition and spectacle.

Harry : Yes, but it costs to much.

Barbara : Not much more than a president. And here it’s an old tradition.

Pamela : Besides, think of all the people from other countries who only come here to see the royal events and the Guards at Buckingham Palace.

Harry : Oh, dear — I seem to have put my foot in it!

CATATAN

Jika kita ingin menyatakan gerakan, biasanya kita pergunakan kata depan lain.

Into dan onto

Kata-kata ini memberi gambaran mengenai in atau on yang disertai gerakan:

  • Let’s go into the Abbey.
  • The Queen come into the church.
  • The King walked onto the platform.
  • The President came onto the balcony.

Anda dapat mengetahui pentingnya pemakaian into dan onto dalam kalimat-kalimat ini dengan membandingkannya dengan in atau on. The King walked on the platform berarti bahwa ia sudah berada disana waktu ia berjalan, sementara kalimat-kalimat yang lain tidak punya arti yang nyata.

Come in, come on

Apakah ini perkecualian? Tidak. Dalam phrasa come in dan come on, in dan on bukan kata depan. In dan on hanya menunjukkan kepada kata kerja, maka dari itu merupakan kata keterangan. (Lihat pelajaran 21).

Inside

  • Most of the kings and queen of England have been crowned inside this building.
  • Luckily I was inside the house when it started raining.

  • I shall meet you inside the church not at the door.
  • He wasn’t of the roof but inside the building when it happened.

  • Let’s go into the Abbey and look at the inside.
  • He painted the inside of his house.

Inside bisa juga dipakai sebagai kata keterangan:

  • He sat down inside.
  • Inside it was dark.

Outside

  • It seems so dark after the sunlight outside the Abbey.
  • I shall meet you outside the church.

Outside bisa juga dipakai sebagai kata benda:

  • I think we’ve looked at the outside of the Abbey.
  • It looks beautiful from the outside.

Outside juga dapat dipakai sebagai kata keterangan:

  • Outside it was raining.
  • I don’t wan to go outside.

Out of

  • Can’t imagine the dead kings and queens being carried out of the sunlight?
  • He walked out of the house.
  • She took the dress out of the suitcase.

Off

  • Take your elbow off my shoulder.
  • He took his clothes off the chair.
  • The ashtray fell of the table.

Away from

  • You talk as if you wanted me to go away from here altogether.
  • She didn’t want to go away from home.
  • Don’t take it away from him.

Away to and off to

Away to and off to keduanya bisa dipakai untuk menyatakan gerakan ke suatu tempat yang jauh.

  • He drove off to London.
  • She goes away to France on holiday every year.
