CATATAN
LETAK KATA KETERANGAN

  • She speak English clearly.
  • The ship is going slowly.
  • The girl did her work eagerly.

  • The soldier sang gaily in the square at midnight.
  • We should come here one morning.
  • He spoke earnestly at the meeting last night.

Tekanan

  • Yesterday it rained hard.
  • In London there is a traffic problem.
  • Obviously, he knows nothing about it.

Kata keterangan tempat dan waktu

Jika ada dua kata keterangan waktu, salah satu bisa didahulukan: I meet him at six o’clock yesterday. atau I meet him yesterday at six o’clock. Tapi jika disertai tanggal, susunannya ialah hari, bulan, tahun: Wednesday, November 20th, 1961.

Kata keterangan frekuensi dan sebagainya

Kata keterangan ini kebanyakan menjawab pertanyaan How often?

(a) Kata keterangan frekuensi:

always often
generally rarely usually
never seldom

(b) Yang lain:

almost just
already nearly scarcely
hardly quite

(c) Gabungan:

hardly ever
nearly always

Kata keterangan seperti itu biasanya:

(a) Diletakkan di depan kata kerja utama:

  • We seldom see the sunrise here.
  • She often talks aboutt psychology.
  • They never go to the cinema.

(b) Diletakkan dibelakang kata kerja to be, kata kerja bantu seperti can, must, would, dan sebagainya, dan to have yang dipakai sebagai kata kerja bantu:

  • She has always been polite.
  • You’re just the sweetest girl I’ve ever met.
  • This view is usually very impressive.
  • It would almost be worth it.

Bila have tidak dipakai sebagai kata kerja bantu, kata keterangan ini ditempatkan sebelum have:

  • They often have friends to tea.

  • Sometimes he annoys me.
  • They came to see my frequently.
  • Occasionally I went for a walk.

Only

Pada umumnya kata keterangan only ditempatkan dekat kata yang diterangkan. Bandingkan:

  • I promised it to you only.
  • I only promised it to you.

Turn into: Change into

  • He turned his house into a school.
  • She changes into evening dress.
