UNGKAPAN

Barbara dan Harry mampir disebuah rumah petani sementara mobilnya diperbaiki.

Barbara : It’s very good of you to invite us in like this.

Famer’s wife : Well, it’s not pleasant to have a breakdown miles from anywhere.

Farmer : These cars! I’d rather ride a horse — even up to London. Horses more reliable than cars any day.

Harry : Do you really think so? But surely — with a big farm like this — don’t you have a car?

Barbara : Darling, he’s not serious. I’m sure he only means that horses are much pleasanter.

Farmer : Of course we’ve got tractors and a couple of lorries, but I enjoyed working with horses more. Times have changed.

Harry : But everything’s going well isn’t it?

Farmer : Oh, yes, although I don’t think the harvest will be particularly good.

Harry : Ah — but you farmers always say that! And then you have a really bumper crop! What do you grow?

Farmer : Wheat, barley, oats. A lot of vegetables too: carrots, cabbages, and peas. Then —

Farmer’s wife : (Menyela). Do have some tea. There’s bread and honey if you’d like some. And bicuits. Please help yourself.

Barbara : You are most kind.

Harry : Thank you. I’ve got a friend who’s farmer. But he keeps mainly livesctock: cows, sheeps and pigs. He sells tons of beef and mutton. Lamb and pork too.

Farmer : Of course in England we import a lot of our meal. But here we keep hens, and turkeys for Christmas time. (Deru mesin dari jauh).

Harry : It sounds as if Peter has started the car.

Barbara : I’m sure Pamela will be arrested by the Policeman one of these days with that old car. Perhaps horses are better.

Harry : Well, thank you very much. We’ve got to go now.

Barbara : I’m just finishing my tea.

Harry : Perhaps we’ll have another breakdown soon and meet some more pleasant people.

CATATAN
DO DENGAN HAVE

(a) Kita telah mengetahui bahwa kata kerja to have bisa dipertegas oleh got bila dipakai dalam arti ‘mempunyai’ (Lihat pelajaran 17). Kini kita sampai pada kesukaran baru dengan kata kerja to have: pelajar-pelajar bahasa Inggris sering heran mendapati do, does, did dipakai dengan have dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya. Kapan kita bisa memakai do, does, did dengan have? Kata-kata itu tidak bisa kita pakai dengan have bila have dipakai sebagai kata kerja bantu, yang tentu saja melibatkan pemakaiannya dengan got.

  • Have time changed?
  • The thief has not been arrested.
  • I haven’t got any vegetables.
  • He hasn’t got to go.

(b) Do, does, did bisa dipakai dengan have bila have berarti mempunyai. Bandingkan cara-cara yang berbeda dalam menyatakan arti mempunyai dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya. Bentuk-bentuk yang kurang umum terdapat dalam kurung:

Negatif:

  • (The engineer hasn’t a car).
  • The engineer doesn’t have a car.
  • The engineer hasn’t got a car. (Paling umum dalam percakapan).

Pertanyaan:

  • Does the engineer have a car? (Has the engineer a car?)
  • Has the engineer got a car?

Pertanyaan dan negatif:

  • Doesn’t the engineer have a car? (Hasn’t the engineer a car?)
  • Hasn’t the engineer got a car?

Seperti yang Anda lihat diatas, bentuk-bentuk He hasn’t, has he?, hasn’t he? yang lebih sederhana kurang umum dipakai.

(c) Bila have dipakai dalam arti mengalami, menerima, atau menghabiskan, do, does, did harus dipakai.

  • We didn’t have a game of tennis.
  • Do you have tea at four o’clock?
  • He didn’t have a lesson this afternoon.
  • Did you have a good journey?
  • We didn’t have a breakdown.

(d) Do, does, did, juga dipakai dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya bila have dipakai dalam arti kausatif dengan akusatif dan past participle dari kata kerja lain:

  • I had it done.
  • Pamela didn’t have her car tested.
  • Did they have her arrested?
  • Why don’t they have the gears mended?

(e) Do, does, did, juga dipakai dengan have to dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya:

  • Does he have to put his books on the floor?
  • You don’t have to see that play!
  • He didn’t have to retire so early.

Maka dari itu, kita dapat mengatakan bahwa do, does, did, biasa dipakai dengan have dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat positif, kecuali bila have dipakai sebagai kata kerja bantuk termasuk have got (to).
