PERCAKAPAN

Barbara : The way people like to crowd together on the beach is interesting.

Mr. Hardcastle : Someone said it was because the English live so much apart from everyone in their homes. On holiday, therefore, they like to be in a crowd, to talk with other people, and to enjoy themselves together. But I think it’s just that some seaside towns have grown too big for the beaches!

Harry : Another thing one notices here is the way older woman wear gay summer dresses. In many European countries they’d accept their age and just wear black. Look at lady going into the sea in that brightly coloured bathing dress. She must be a least seventy.

Barbara : Sh! Be careful what you say. People can overhear you.

Harry : Nonsense! Everyone’s much too busy talking about everyone else.

Mr. Hardcastle : Many foreigners says, “Oh, you English are so unsociable!” I don’t know if it’s true.

Harry : I must say I don’t find English people difficult to talk to.

Barbara : Of course we haven’t really spoken to so many, and it’s so easy to make generalizations.

Mr. Hardcastle : By the way, talking of speaking to Englishman, I forgot to tell you that I had a word with Davidson, this business friend of mine you met at the fair. He confirmed lunch tomorrow. You can talk the whole matter over then.

Harry : Oh, that’s excellent. Things are certainly looking up. Perhaps everything the fortune-teller said to me will come true.

Barbara : What did she say?

Harry : Ah, that’s secret. If I tell you, everything may fall through. One can never tell!

Barbara : You are becoming superstitious.

Harry : Superstitious! Of course I’m not superstitious. People laugh at fortune-tellers, but sometimes, you know, one must trust what they say. Especially if they make you feel good!

CATATAN

  • Be careful what you say.
  • I don’t know what he said.

  • They’re always saying things they don’t believe.
  • She said she didn’t like him.
  • He said, “I’m leaving.”

  • He said something to somebody.
  • Perhaps everything the fortune-teller said to me will come true.

  • I told him what I thought.
  • Tell me the reason for your visit.
  • They told everything they knew.

  • We tell something to somebody.
  • I told it to him.

  • I told it to all my friends.
  • I told them everything you said.

Tell juga mempunyai arti berikut:

1. Menceritakan atau memberitahukan:

  • He told me a story.
  • Can you tell me the time?
  • The boys is always telling lies.

2. Menyuruh:

  • The general told the soldier to come at once.
  • I told him not to make generalizations.
  • Can you tell her to remember her umbrella?

(Pelajaran 16).

3. Arti menurut ungkapan:

  • One can never tell (be sure) what he will do.
  • I can’t tell (distinguish) the difference between the two brothers.
  • He told my fortune.

Kalimat langsung dan tak langsung

Say biasanya dipakai dengan sambungan kalimat langsung:

  • “English people crowd together on the beach,” he said.
  • “You are very superstitious,” she said.
  • Many foreigners say, “Oh, you English are unsociable.”

  • The film star said (that) she was very unhappy.
  • She said (that) you were very supersittious.
  • Many foreigners say (that) you are unsociable.

Berhati-hatilah terhadap kesalahan yang umum: “I am happy,” he told. I am happy,” he said.

  • I forgot to tell you that I had a word with Davidson.
  • She told me you were very supersttious.
  • Many foreigners told us that the English were unsociable.

  • He spoke for twenty minutes at the celebration last night.
  • You hardly talked at all at the party.
  • We talked for an hour.
  • We learn to speak when we are very young.

Dengan sebuah obyek persona, talk dan speak menggunakan kata depan to atau with:

  • We like to be in a crowd to talk with other people.
  • I don’t find English people difficult to talk to.
  • The American talking with you.
  • She enjoys talking with you.

Tetapi talk atau speak menggunakan about atau of jika yang dimaksudkan adalah “berbicara tentang sesuatu.”

  • Taking of speaking to Englishmen.
  • I can’t talk about that. It’s secret.
  • He spoke of the difficulties he had had in London.
  • We spoke about the journey we made last summer.

To talk over berarti to “discuss”:

  • To talk something over with someone.
  • We must talk thins over with John.

APART FROM

Ada dua pemakaian apart from: ‘separate’ from (terpisah dari) dan ‘except for’ (kecuali, seandainya tidak):

  • The English live so much apart from everyone else.
  • I like him apart from the fact that he talks too much.

THE WAY

Perhatikan bagaimana the way dipakai untuk menunjukkan ‘The manner in which‘.

  • One notices the way older women wear gay dresses.
  • I don’t like the way he speaks to her.

KATA DEPAN

  • While the clerk was on holidays he read a lot of books.
