PERCAKAPAN

Keluarga Sallis sedang dalam perjalanan menuju hotel dengan naik taksi:

Barbara : Now that we’re alone. Peter, I’d like you give me some information. What’s all this about getting job in England?

Peter : Oh, nothing defenite. But I may try and get work here when I’ve finished my course at the University. That’s all.

Barbara : But, why? Surely you’ve been in England long enough

Peter : Maybe. But as I’m getting married —

Barbara : You see. Harry, I told you this would happen even before the news of their engagement was announced. Now that he’s marrying an English girl we may never see Peter again!

Harry : Come now! It isn’t as bad as that.

Peter : Can’t I live where I like when I’m married?

Barbara : Of course. But you should think of your parents a little and the country where you were brought up.

Harry : That’ll do now, Barbara, and you, Peter. We’re there — we’re at the hotel.

Peter : (Tanpa memperdulikan Harry.) But, Mother, I haven’t said I was going to live here for good. I only want to see what the possibilities are.

Barbara : Yes, but if everything goes well you’ll stay here.

Peter : And then you won’t be able to interfere without making a long journey?

Barbara : Peter, how dare you speak like that!

Peter : Oh, I’m sorry, Mother. I shouldn’t lose my temper. But if I’m old enough to get married, surely I can also decide where I’m going to live.

Barbara : I suppose you think I’m going to be traditional mother-in-law!

Peter : No, but —

Harry : This is the limit! When are you going to get out?

Barbara : Oh, have we arrived?

Harry : Have we arrived! Look, the meter’s just clocked up another sispence. D’you think I’m going to pay for you sit there and argue?

Barbara : Well, it’s all very upsetting.

Harry : You’d better continue your argument at the hotel. You’ll have some furniture there that you can throw at one another. I think even that would be less expensive in the long run!

CATATAN
MAY

Seperti must, should, dan sebagainya, may:

  1. Tidak mempunyai bentuk infinitif.
  2. Tidak dipakai dengan to do dalam kalimat tanya dan kalimat negatif; Contoh: May I?
  3. Tidak ditambah ‘s’ untuk orang ketiga tunggal waktu sekarang; Contoh: He may.
  4. Diikuti oleh kata kerja yang tidak di dahului oleh partikel to; Contoh: He may go.

May dipakai:

1. Untuk menyatakan kemungkinan:

  • I may try and get work here.
  • My mother-in-law may arrive tomorrow.
  • We may never see Peter again.
  • They may lose their money in the long run.

2. Untuk menyatakan izin:

  • You may smoke.
  • Her father says she may not go to the cinema.
  • You may not throw stones on to the lawn.

3. Untuk membuat sesuatu permintaan atau saran lebih sopan:

  • My I help you?
  • My I interfere here, and tell you what I think?
  • If I may say so, I don’t think you ought to do it.

4. Untuk menyatakan keinginan. Pemakaian may untuk menyatakan keinginan tidak begitu lazim, namun mungkin anda mendengarnya dalam lagu-lagu populer:

  • May all your dream come true!

Tetapi jangan sampai keliru dengan pertanyaan:

  • May all our friend come too?

MAY dan CAN

Can menyatakan kemampuan melakukan sesuatu sebagai kebalikan dari may yang menyatakan izin:

  • You can have one but you mayn’t.
  • Of course she can get married, but I say she mayn’t.

Namun, kemampuan untuk melakukan sesuatu kadang-kadang tergantung pada izin, dan kerap kali baik can atau may bisa dipakai dalam kalimat yang mengandung arti izin atau bahkan permintaan:

  • You can’t (mayn’t) go to the cinema.
  • Can (may) I help you?
  • No. You can’t (mayn’t) smoke.

Untuk memberikan atau menolak izin, can lebih kuat daripada may sebab can menyatakan bahwa, sekali izin tidak diberikan, orang tersebut tidak bisa melakukan apa yang hendak ia lakukan.

TO BE ABLE, TO BE ALLOWED

Ini adalah kata lain untuk perhaps.

  • “Surely you’ve been in England long enough?” “Maybe.”
  • “Will you pass you exam?” “Maybe.”

TO EDUCATE

Perhatikan perbedaan antara to bring up dan to educate. To bring up biasanya mengenai bagaimana seseorang telah dibersarkan: cara bertindaknya, tingkah laku pada umumnya, dan sebagainya. To educate biasanya mengenai pendidikan formal seseorang (di sekolah, dan sebagainya.)

  • He was well brought up and is always polite.
  • As he was well educated, he knows there languages.

GO WELL

Perhatikan tiga pemakaian go well:

  • This watch goes well.
  • If all goes well.
  • This hat goes well with these shoes.

KATA BENDA KOLEKTIF

  • That information is interesting.
  • The news is good.
  • The furniture you bought is beautiful.
  • The advice he gave me is bad.
  • His knowledge of English is small.

Tetapi, jika kita ingin lebih pasti dan menggunakan a, an, kita bisa menggunakan a piece of, walaupun ini jarang dipakai dengan knowledge.

  • He told me an interesting piece of news.
  • She bought a piece of furniture.
  • That piece of information will be useful.
  • I gave him a piece of advice.
