PERCAKAPAN

Woman : Come in quickly!

Harry : Excuse me, we just wanted

Woman : Please come in. That’s right. Otherwise they’ll escape into the street and be run over.

Peter : Who will escape? We —

Woman : Our cats. It’s feeding-time.

Harry : (Heran). Your cats?

Woman : Of course. I suppose you want to leave your pets here for the holidays.

Peter : Well, actually —

Woman : Oh, they’ll be wonderfully looked after. You have no idea how well we treat them. It’s as if they were royal guests.

Harry : The point is —

Woman : I am so glad you came just now. It’s so interesting to see them drinking up their milk. Look, here we are. You see each animal has its own little private suite in the garden. They’re so happy.

Harry : (Dengan sabar). How many cats have you got, madam?

Woman : Oh well, it varies. In summer, when most people go away for their holidays, we have up to thirty.

Peter : And how many dogs?

Woman : (Terkejut). Dogs? None! We’ve no dogs here and never have had!

Peter : (Tak berdaya). No, of course not. I suppose it would be no good trying. They wouldn’t get on well with the cats.

Woman : Now juts look at this sweet, little Siamese kitten. Come here, pussy, pussy, pussy. It belongs to Lord Dartmor, you know. Quite a few of our cats come from the best families. Look at that fur! Isn’t it a beautiful animal?

Harry : (Tidak menentu). Very beautiful.

Woman : And the tail! And look at his pink gums! You know you can always tell the health of a cat by its mouth. He’s very playful of course, like most kittens, but he won’t hurt you. We cut their claws every forthnight, you know.

Peter : Excuse me. We really must —

Woman : Oh, but of course, he’s no better than most of our animals. None of them are in bad condition when we’ve had them for a little time. I’m sure you’ll find that no home in London is comfortable as this one.

Peter : I’m sorry but —

Woman : What is it?

Harry : We really came to ask the way.

Woman : (Heran). Ask the way?

Harry : You see we’re lost.

Woman : Why on earth didn’t you say so?

Peter : Well, we did try, and we didn’t want to appear rude.

Harry : (Dengan cepat). Yes — and anyway it’s been most interesting seeing you cats.

Woman : I’m sure it has. Such beautiful animals as there are few and far between. You know we’ve got several prizewinners. Now, that one over there —

Peter : Excuse my interupting, but we really must find our way to the Lencester Hotel in Brown Street. We both adore cats, but please would you help us?

CATATAN
NO

1. No sebagai pengganti not any:

  • We haven’t any time.
  • We have no time.
  • They haven’t brought any money.
  • They’ve brought no money.

No atau not any biasanya dipakai untuk menggantikan not di depan kata benda abstrak, kata benda tidak dapat di hitung dan kata benda bentuk jamak. Jadi keliru bila mengatakan: We have not dogs. Seharusnya kita mengatakan:

  • We have no dogs.
  • We haven’t any dogs
  • There is no bread.
  • There isn’t any bread.

2. No bisa pula dipakai dengan kata benda yang bukan jamak, tidak dapat dihitung atau umum, dengan menekankan arti: not one.

  • No home in London is a comfortable as ours.
  • No man is happy without someone to love.

Begitu pula no:

  • He’s no better than most of our cats.
  • I’m no bigger than you are.
  • She’s no worse at English than her brother.

4. No dan any bisa dipakai dengan dua kata sifat biasa: good dan different, bahkan bila kedua kata sifat itu tidak dalam bentuk komparatif:

  • It would be no good trying.
  • You ideas is no different.

  • He’s a very rude person.
  • He’s no gentleman.
  • She’s an ugly girl.
  • She’s no beauty.

NONE

  • I saw none.
  • None came.

  • None of them are in a bad condition.
  • None of the girls would come.

TO LEAVE

To leave banyak penggunaannya:

  • He left at six o’clock.
  • He left the house.
  • He left his wacth in the office.
  • He left out the last word in the sentence.
  • He left his umbrella behind.
  • Leave me alone.

  • You can tell the health of a cat by his mouth.
