PERCAKAPAN

Harry : I had such an interesting meeting with Pamela’s employer. I think he’s a very fascinating man.

Pamela : So do I. I thought so when I first met him and still do, although I’ve worked with him for almost three years.

Peter : If you’re much more enthusiastic, Pamela, you’ll make me jealous.

Barbara : What happened? What did he suggest? Tell us, Harry.

Harry : It was all so interesting. He thought I should enter a television contest.

Peter : A television contest! But surely that’s only for certain kinds of people such as bathing beauties and people who are good at party games. With all due respect, Father, I don’t think you’d have much success there.

Harry : No, but this is a special contest for people with original ideas. Thoses that are really good receive a prize of $5.000 in order to give them a start. I would enter as competitor with other inventors.

Peter : And what would you have to do?

Harry : I’d just have to explain my idea.

Barbara : On television?

Harry : That’s right.

Barbara : With millions of people watching? But Harry, it would be such an ordeal.

Harry : I know.

Barbara : Suppose you were tongue-tied — with all those millions sitting in thier drawing-rooms, watching you stuttering and going red in the face.

Harry : B-but —

Barbara : There you are. You’re even stuttering now — and people would recognise you in the streets and laugh at you.

Peter : Oh, I don’t think so. You’re exaggerating, Mother.

Harry : Barbara never believes I’m any good at anything!

Peter : I’m sure Father’s eloquence will be such that everyone will be most impressed.

Harry : Well, Pamela’s employer suggested I should enter this contest, and I’m going to do so — whatever you say.

Barbara : (Menyesal). All right. I’m sorry. As long as you know what you’re doing.

Peter : Father’s always been self-confident, and I’m sure he’ll continue to be so — even on television.

Harry : Thank you, Peter. I’m quite sure there’ll be no difficulty. You’ll see.

CATATAN

Menekankan kata sifat

Cara menggunakan so bermacam-macam.

  • It was all so interesting.
  • He did his work so easily that he finished early.
  • The play was so fascinating.
  • His idea was so original that I was impressed.

So: Also

So juga mempunyai arti also.

  • “I like him.” “So do I.”
  • “This competitor may win.” “So may his rival.”
  • “They must go soon.” “So must I.”

Menggantikan kata kerja atau phrasa

So dengan do, does, did, boleh dipakai untuk menggantikan kata kerja atau phrasa sebelumnya yang tidak ingin kita ulang.

  • I wanted to talk, but I was told I mustn’t do so.
  • He asked me to open the box and I did so.
  • Pamela’s employer suggested I should enter this contest and I shall do so.

Menggantikan kata benda atau kata sifat

So boleh juga dipakai untuk menggantikan kata benda atau kata sifat bila dipakai dengan kata-kata kerja tertentu seperti be dan remain.

  • Father’s always been sefl-confident and I’m sure he’ll always continue to be so.
  • We were happy and wanted to remain so.

Menggantikan seluruh kalimat

(a) Dengan pengertian ‘true‘:

  • “He is coming tomorrow.” “If so I shall see him.”
  • He’s very self-confident.” “That’s certainly so.”

(b) Dengan say, think, believe, suppose, hope, dan sebagainya. Untuk membenarkan apa yang telah dinyatakan.

  • “I think he’s a very fascinating man.” “Yes, I thought so when I first met him.”
  • “Is he coming tonight?” “I believe so.”

  • “You forgot your umbrella!” “So I did.”
  • “He’s come back already.” “So has he!”

SUCH

Such seperti so dipakai untuk memberi tekanan, tetapi so dipakai dengan kata sifat atau kata keterangan sedangkan such dipakai bila kata sifat diikuti oleh kata benda yang diterangkannya, atau dengan kata benda saja. Bandingkan:

  • It was so interesting.
  • It was such an interesting meeting.
  • We recognised so many people.
  • We recognised such a lot of people.
  • The ordeal would be so terrible.
  • It would be such a terrible ordeal.
  • It would be such an ordeal.

  • His eloquence is such that everyone will be impressed.
  • The ordeal was such that few people could bear it.

SUCH AS

Such as dipakai dalam arti “for example‘:

  • That’s only for certain kinds of people such as bathing beauties and people who are good at games.
  • She wants many expensive things such as a new house, a car, a boat, etc.

LIKE DAN AS

Like menyatakan kemiripan antara orang dan barang-barang. As menyatakan kesamaan cara atau kesamaan dua perbuatan atau kejadian. Like adalah kata depan yang diikuti oleh kata benda atau kata ganti; as mengawali anak kalimat. Bandingkan:

  • He speaks like his brother.
  • He speaks as his brother does.
  • She is just like her sister.
  • She has gone away, as her sister said.

As dapat dipakai sebagai kata depan yang mempunyai arti ‘in the capacity of‘:

Perhatikan perbedaan antara kalimat-kalimat berikut:

  • He speaks like a father. (Similiar to father).
  • He speaks as a father. (He is a father).

As juga mempunyai arti:

(a) Because: As you refuse to recognise me, I shall go away.

(b) While: As he was walking, he began to stutter.

He is jealous as you are. Perhatikan pula ungkapan: As long as you know what are you doing, I’m quite happy.
